Purpose
This Level 1 Assistant Coaching qualification focuses on the skills and competences required to be able to assist the delivery of sports or physical activity coaching sessions under the direct supervision of a more qualified coach.
Goals
- To create game-like training sessions that encourage players’ ownership (decision-making)
- To create a game day environment that encourages players’ ownership (decision-making)
Outcome
This qualification is ideal for learners who are seeking an entry point to coaching and are looking at supporting a more qualified coach.
Learners may gain opportunities as a paid or voluntary assistant coach. The qualification is also recognised as the industry standard Level 1 qualification for coaches by UK Coaching.
Who is this course for?
The qualification is designed for those who wish to become involved in coaching at an assistant level, and to have responsibility for the delivery of coaching activities under the direct supervision of a more qualified coach.
It is an entry point to coaching, depending on the ability and confidence of the learner. It is directed at learners who have an interest in sport or physical activity.
Course Experience
Our open courses are delivered through four face to face delivery days. Learners will be required to:
- Phase 1: Complete a series of tasks within their 1st4Sport qualification portfolio
- Phase 2: Deliver 1 x 15-minute physical activity /sport session on day 4 of the course with the support of the Coach Developer (Tutor)
Registration is valid for a 1-year period. Therefore, learners could complete phase 1 initially and then progress onto phase 2 when appropriate. Re-assessment fees would be applicable if learners were deemed not yet competent in phase 2.

Eligibility
- Be appropriately identified
- Be at least 14 years of age
- Be able to communicate effectively in English (this includes listening, speaking reading and writing)
- Have access to a laptop and good WiFi to complete the e-learning modules.
- Any special learning requirements must be made clear at the registration process.
- MUST be actively coaching
Assessment Criteria
The assessment methods used in this qualification are:
- Coursework (in 2 of 3 mandatory units)
- Portfolio of evidence (in 1 of 3 mandatory units)
- Practical demonstration/assignment (in 3 of 3 mandatory units)
- Coaching games/coaching training sessions

The course can be delivered to specific groups such as schools, colleges etc. We are also able to deliver this course in face-to-face and blended learning formats.
